Acid-Blocking Drugs Now Linked to THIS Disease!
Heartburn can be terribly uncomfortable.
That feeling of tightness and burning in your chest is miserable! And being told you have to give up your favorite foods to find relief doesn’t make anything better either.
Now, when your heartburn strikes, you might be tempted to reach for acid-blocking medicine. And who could blame you?
But I’m here to tell you that this move would be a mistake… especially if the medicine is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), sometimes sold as omeprazole (Prilosec) or lansoprazole (Prevacid).
There are plenty of reasons why acid-blockers make it to the top of my never-take drugs, but now there’s another…
A new study has connected acid-blocking PPIs to this disease… and it’s downright shocking.
I’m talking about irritable bowel disease (IBD).
One of the reasons I refuse to take PPIs is because they stop stomach acid production, which is essential to your body… especially as you age.
Without enough stomach acid, you’re not able to absorb many minerals or vitamins, like calcium, potassium, magnesium, and B vitamins.
But it doesn’t stop there. Acid blockers also harm your microbiome, and they can increase the risk of heart disease, pneumonia, and fractures.
And now, according to a research team who published their study in the journal Gastroenterology, PPIs increased the risk for irritable bowel disease.
In the survey of data from three large-scale studies, researchers found a connection between frequent PPI use and cases of IBD.
Not only that, those taking H2 receptor antagonists – another type of acid blocker which is supposed to be “safer” – saw their risk of IBD increase as well.
Why does this happen?
Many studies have shown that long-term use of acid-blockers can change the gut microbiome, which increases the risk for IBD.
Other studies have shown an increased number of bad bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Clostridium difficile in people who use acid-blockers – as well as a reduction in good bacteria like Faecalibacterium.
So instead of reaching for one of these dangerous drugs, try my method instead.
Dr. Scott’s Foolproof Formula to Avoid Heartburn:
· Avoid soda. Sugary drinks are infamous for gas production (at both ends). When gas moves up from your digestive tract, it often carries stomach acid, causing heartburn.
· Stay away from sugar. Foods that contain sugar work exactly like soda (see above) and cause gas. This includes foods that act like sugar such as breads, grains, and starchy vegetables.
· Supplement with a probiotic. A healthy gut microbiome can help reduce heartburn. Taking a probiotic can help restore your healthy gut bacteria.
· Don’t skip the salt. Salt helps keep bad bacteria in check while also producing strong stomach acid… which ironically, reduces heartburn.
