Mailbag! FIGHT BACK Against Diabetes

I have type 2 diabetes and am currently taking medication for it. I’ve heard stories about folks sending it into remission, but I’m not sure how to get started. Is it even possible?

–Bert from Nashville, TN

Bert,

Yes, there are ways to reverse type 2 diabetes and put it into remission – even mainstream medicine is starting to agree. Nowadays, there’s a real chance of reducing or even eliminating medications (with your doctor’s guidance), especially if you start early in the course of the disease.

But there are a few caveats.

Let me start by saying that high blood sugar is very damaging to many parts of your body, and if you don’t maintain your blood sugar, it can lead to an early death.

This means that if you’re unable to control your blood sugar through diet, exercise, and supplementation, then you must continue to take your medications.

And, as always, you shouldn’t make any changes to your medications without talking to your doctor first.

One final thing to keep in mind: as you make the changes below, it could dramatically lower your blood sugar, which can be very dangerous. Make sure you carefully monitor your blood sugar whenever you alter your diet, exercise, or start a supplement program.

Having said all that, here are my suggestions.

Dr. Scott’ Anti-Diabetes Program

  • Start with diet. Cut out as much sugar as you can. Don’t forget to look for hidden sources of sugar, like breads, pastas, snacks, and condiments. Try to base your diet around proteins and vegetables.
  • Find easy ways to exercise. Take the stairs, walk to your errands, stand during television commercials… every little bit counts. Even better, find something fun and stick with it, like ballroom dancing or yoga. Exercise has been proven to help control blood sugar, and it can help you lose weight as well.
  • Weight control. The best way to control diabetes, as you’ve probably heard, is to maintain a healthy weight. Once you start sticking with exercise and limiting your sugar intake, you’ll be surprised at how fast the weight can come off.
  • Try cinnamon.  When it’s super-concentrated, cinnamon becomes a powerful weapon against high blood sugar. It’s easy to find in supplement form, and it’s dirt cheap. Just make sure you stick with Ceylon cinnamon, not cassia, to get the best benefits.
  • Turmeric. There’s not much this seasoning CAN’T do! It contains compounds that are naturally anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory. Turmeric can also help reduce insulin resistance, allowing glucose to enter the cells more effectively. You can add more turmeric to your diet through cooking, or simply add it to your supplement regime.
  • Olive leaf extract. This is one of the most powerful herbs for keeping blood sugar under control. I’ve been recommending it to my patients for years.
