FDA Announces Startling New Food Rule

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

Thanks to the mainstream, there are few things that scare people more than this basic food ingredient.

I’ve watched as people pour sugar and vegetable oils on to their food while drinking a bottle of tequila and smoking… and yet SHRIEK at the sight of this common nutrient.

And now the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has joined in by issuing new guidelines that restrict how much of it goes in our food.

The problem is, it’s nearly harmless…

The FDA, in all its wisdom, has issued new guidelines designed to cut salt out of the food we eat. They claim that removing salt can help reduce high blood pressure and heart disease.

Their goal is to have manufacturers reduce the sodium content of 163 different pre-packaged and processed foods over the next two and a half years.

But the problem is, salt isn’t the real enemy.

A large study, published a few years ago in Frontiers in Endocrinology, found that salt does nothing to change blood pressure for most folks.

The truth is, high blood pressure can actually be caused by poor blood sugar control. Out-of-whack blood sugar can damage the kidney’s ability to control blood pressure… and this, coupled with the stiffening of blood vessels as we age, can quickly become a disaster.

Another reason high blood pressure can happen is far too many folks don’t get enough vitamin C and essential fatty acids like the EPA and DHA found in fish oil.

Furthermore, other major studies show that there is no connection between high blood pressure and salt.

End of story.

There are many benefits, however, to eating salt:

  • Unlike sugar, you can trust your taste buds to tell you when you’ve had enough.
  • Real salt contains trace minerals that you can’t find in any other food you eat.
  • Salt is needed to create hydrochloric acid, which is essential for digesting food.
  • Salt balances water in your body and keeps you from being dehydrated.
  • Salt can also help increase energy and improve sleep.

I’ve even seen a few patients get rid of night cramps by taking salt.

But before you rush to your saltshaker, know this: the type of salt matters.

It’s still a good idea to stay away from high sodium levels found in processed meats and fast food.

I prefer to use Himalayan or Celtic salt, which you can get a lot of places now. I like Real Salt by Redmond. This brand is centered in Utah, but you can find it lots of places online.

P.S. Your doctor has probably told you that salt is the worst thing for your heart… but he’s wrong. Find out more right here.
