Easy Routine Arms You Against Pneumonia

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

I know your mind may have been elsewhere this last year, with COVID-19 taking up most of the space to think about our health.

But in the background are other diseases that continue to devastate people’s health.

And while they’re not making headlines, they’re still just as dangerous.

Pneumonia is a leading cause of death among seniors (as well as the very young) and folks with pre-existing health conditions.

In the United States, pneumonia leads to 1.5 million emergency room visits and 43,881 deaths each year. In 2016, pneumonia was the fourth leading cause of death worldwide.

Luckily, there’s a great way to arm yourself against pneumonia… and it starts with an EASY routine.

And it’s one you should be doing anyway!

The answer? Exercise.

Pneumonia can stem from ANY infection (usually bacteria or virus) that attacks lung tissues. When infected, the lungs struggle to provide oxygen for the body… and pneumonia takes hold.

A recent study, published in the online journal GeroScience, found that exercise was one of the best ways to prevent pneumonia.

The researchers analyzed ten studies that included more than 1 million patients and found that people who exercised regularly had a MUCH lower risk of developing pneumonia.

Even better, they also had less of a risk of pneumonia-related death than folks who were the least active or sedentary.

And guess what? You don’t have to be a marathon runner to be considered “active.”

While it was difficult to determine just how much exercise is needed to keep pneumonia at bay, other studies have shown that even 30 minutes of exercise A WEEK was enough to have a protective effect.

So, get off the couch, get outside, and move your body around a bit. Your lungs are going to love you for it!

P.S. Your best defense against ANY disease is a strong immune system. Click here to find out which foods can BEEF UP your immune system and keep illness at bay.
