Tropical Fruit Keeps Aging Muscles STRONG
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
Want to be active later in life?
If you answered “yes” (I’m assuming most people did!), then I have another question for you…
How far can you walk in six minutes?
If you can make it around a racing track (400 meters) more than once in six minutes, then you don’t need to read the rest of this.
But if you are slower than that OR if you want to learn how to easily keep your muscles strong as you age, then read on.
Because there’s a super easy way to help keep those muscles humming well into your golden years.
And it all starts with this tropical fruit.
A new study from JAMA Network Open found that pomegranate extract helped seniors keep their muscles healthy.
The researchers found that seniors who took urolithin A (an extract from pomegranates) were able to walk further on a six-minute walking test than people who didn’t take the supplement.
Pomegranates are great for you because they contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and dietary fiber.
When you eat pomegranate, it travels down your digestive tract where it meets gut bacteria (called your microbiome). Those bacteria then metabolize the pomegranate and produce something scientists call a POSTbiotic.
Urolithin A in pomegranate is a postbiotic, and it also improves muscle endurance and metabolism. It does this by supporting healthy mitochondria, those little powerhouses in our bodies that produce energy.
But if you really want to keep your muscles healthy, try this too:
- Magnesium helps build muscles, promotes muscle relaxation, and prevents cramping.
- Iron helps to bring oxygen to your muscles. This is important because without oxygen your muscles can’t function properly. Do not take iron if your post-menopausal or a man unless you have a blood test proving you are low.
- Vitamin D is necessary for immune function and to strengthen your bones, but it’s also important for muscle growth maintenance because it helps build testosterone – which is critical for good bone muscle building (in both men and women).
- Protein is absolutely essential to building muscles and help repair. Eating a wide variety of proteins is your best bet.
- Vitamin B-12 is also important for oxygen delivery to muscles.
P.S. Want more ways to get stronger muscles? Try this easy “band exercise.”
