Mailbag! [LADIES] 7 Tips for a Waning Sex Drive

I’m dealing with low sex drive and I hate it. Is there anything you can recommend?

–Tanya from Nashville, TN

Tanya,

Not many people know that lack of libido is more common in women than in men. In fact, women are more than twice as likely to lose their lack of sex drive than men.

Despite this, the mainstream has little to offer women who find themselves in this predicament.

And, unfortunately, the list of reasons for a drop in sex drive is long: stress, prescription medications, sleep problems, depression, relationship issues, being overweight, and exercising too much OR too little.

I obviously can’t address all of those here, but let me name some things to try that can really help.

  • Dark chocolate. Let’s start with the most fun one! Chocolate contains tryptophan, which helps with the release of serotonin. This hormone can lead to a brightened mood and also act as an aphrodisiac. Choose as high a percentage dark chocolate as you can.
  • Exercise. Women who exercise feel stronger in their bodies and more sexually attractive. Exercise is also great for your brain and increases blood flow throughout your body, bringing oxygen and nutrients to your brain and sexual organs.
  • Arginine. The amino acid arginine is known to help increase blood flow throughout the body as it helps release nitric oxide. While this pathway is well known to men (it’s how the drug Viagra works), it also works well in women.
  • Protein. Another great source of arginine is protein-rich foods such as eggs, fish, chicken, and beef. If you don’t normally eat a lot of protein, try this and see what it can do for your sexual drive.
  • Multivitamin. Take a quality multivitamin daily to make sure you’re getting enough nutrients. If you’re post-menopausal, then you want to find one without iron.
  • Maca root. Maca is a root vegetable that has been known to increase sexual desire for hundreds of years. Try taking it as a supplement.
  • Ginkgo biloba. This supplement is known for brain health, but I find it works great for women who’ve lost their sexual desire (especially those who are taking antidepressants).
