“Super Berry” BEATS BACK Against Dementia

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

It starts with misplacing your keys.

Next, you find yourself struggling to remember a neighbor’s name or your grandchild’s birthday.

Soon, you forget how to get to the store.

This slow descent into dementia will happen to many – especially those who don’t take steps NOW to keep their brain protected.

There’s a long list of things that help safeguard your brain (and I’ll share some of those with you) – one of which is a tasty “super berry.”

You’ll want to grab it during your next grocery run and start BEATING BACK against dementia ASAP.  

A new study, published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, found that older folks (age 50-80) who regularly ate cranberries had significant improvements in their memory. (As an added bonus, they also saw a drop in their “bad” LDL cholesterol.)

Participants ate the equivalent of one cup of cranberries every day – either in the form of whole cranberries, drinking the juice, or taking a supplement.

Certain foods, like cranberries, are rich in plant nutrients. The ones in cranberries are called phenolic compounds – which are vitamin-like molecules that we get when we eat certain plants.

Increasing phenolic compounds leads to a drop in oxidation, a decrease in inflammation, and a greater flow of oxygen and glucose to parts of the brain that support memory function.

But cranberries are not alone in containing phenolic compounds – all berries have them.

So, if you want to keep your brains about you, make sure you’re eating or supplementing with some brightly-colored berries every day.

In addition, here are some other suggestions for better brain health:

  • Exercise: Exercise increases blood flow to your brain. Even a little exercise can go a long way. Try walking a few minutes every day and then see if you can increase that to 30-40 minutes a day.
