The Downside to Drinking Dairy? [Men, Must-Read]

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

You may not be aware, but the dairy lobby is very strong – which makes it hard to believe any studies financed by them.

Because of this, you almost NEVER see a negative study on dairy foods, but occasionally one sneaks through.

A new study found a strong connection between dairy foods and this often-fatal disease.

But it’s not so important what they found, but WHY there’s a connection between dairy foods and this increased risk.

Because if the researchers are right, then consuming dairy foods can increase your risk of all sorts of health problems.

The new study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that men who consume higher amounts of dairy foods (especially milk) have a significantly higher risk of prostate cancer compared to men who consume little to none.

The new study, from Loma Linda University Health, found that the risk of prostate cancer was raised in men who ate dairy — but this increase was not associated with the intake of non-dairy calcium. This ruled out calcium as a cause of the increased risk.

So, there is something specifically in milk that is causing this problem.

The researchers found that men who consumed over 1 ¾ cup of milk a day were 25 percent more likely to have prostate cancer compared to men who only had ½ cup or less per day.

The researchers point to the sex hormone content of dairy milk as a possible cause — sex hormones include testosterone, estrogen, and others.

Prostate cancer risk is known to increase from exposure to these hormones.

Milk has high amounts of sex hormones because 75 percent of milk-producing dairy cows are pregnant – and it’s common practice for hormones to be given to dairy cows.

Other studies show the consumption of dairy products increases the insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), another hormone that can supercharge the growth of certain cancers.

It’s not just men who should worry, increases in both hormones and IGF-1 in women have been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer.

Increased hormone levels in both men and women can be dangerous, leading to all sorts of diseases. For men, in particular, too many hormones can cause problems in the bedroom, lead to the development of breasts and many other complications.

This is unfortunate because I consider dairy to be very healthy food. It’s a good protein, high in many essential amino acids, has a good fat profile, and is very satisfying – which reduces hunger.

The best option is to eat organic or pasture-raised dairy foods that don’t have added hormones. They are a bit more expensive but well worth the cost to avoid cancer and other risks.

P.S. If you or a loved one are already struggling with prostate cancer, you’ll want to see this latest research. A new study has found that this “bacteria secret” could be KEY to surviving prostate cancer.
