Researchers at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) found that this simple plant hides a huge secret. Thunder god vine can help patients with pancreatic cancer.
Thunder god vine is the common name for the plant called Tripterygium wilfordii. It’s been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years to treat inflammatory conditions like arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and certain kidney problems.
The researchers focused on one of the key ingredients of the plant: triptolide. And they uncovered something EXCITING.
Triptolide attacks cancer cells by breaking up the stroma, a cocoon-like structure that surrounds tumors. The stroma shields and hides the diseased cells from your body’s immune system.
In other words, dismantle the stroma, and your body can swoop in and attack the cancer.
The scientists found that triptolide can also disrupt super-enhancers. Pancreatic cancer cells need these strings of DNA to maintain their genetic stability.
So, super-enhancers—like their name implies—enhance cancer cells. When you strip them away, the diseased cells essentially lose their stability and collapse in on themselves.
Not only that, cancer cells rely on super-enhancers for growth, survival, and replication. Once disrupted, the cells are unable to continue multiplying and building tumors.
This study was conducted in a lab. This means much more research must be done before we know what effects it will have in real-world situations.
But what we know so far is already very exciting. It provides hope for people with pancreatic cancer and reminds us that natural alternatives can often enhance (or in some cases even replace) many mainstream medicine “solutions.”
