Don’t Ignore This ODD Alzheimer’s Red Flag
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
It’s a nearly universal experience. When you reach a certain age, you start to worry about your memory.
Because when you’re a senior, a “simple” forgotten name or missed appointment is NEVER simple. Instead, it’s yet another reason to be anxious about whether it’s an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease.
After all, any random brain burp or memory hiccup could be how it all starts. And let’s face it, if your memories fade away, your independence will disappear right along with them.
Frankly, it’s terrifying.
But recent research can help you pack away the panic and finally relax. Because scientists have uncovered an obvious red flag that a stunning 90 percent of Alzheimer’s patients have.
And once you know what to ACTUALLY look for, you can spot this life-destroying disease faster and make moves to help HALT it in its tracks.
It turns out we’re focusing on the wrong thing. Instead of fixing all of your attention on memory slips, you should be devoting some thought to your nose.
Yes, I did say your NOSE. Because it turns out that 90 percent of Alzheimer’s patients lose their sense of smell.
You see, the researchers found that amyloid-beta, the toxic proteins that turn up in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients, seem to seek out a specific part of the brain. The ugly invaders migrate to the area that controls your olfactory system (your sense of smell).
For the study, researchers used mice with large amounts of amyloid-beta proteins in their brains and typical Alzheimer’s symptoms.
To test the rodent’s sense of smell, the researchers hid a variety of tempting foods and then watched to see if the mice could find them by smell alone. As suspected, the critters did indeed have a lot of trouble locating the food by their scents.
It turns out those amyloid beta proteins weren’t the only problem either.
Typically, your brain cells constantly die and regenerate. Aging and Alzheimer’s disease slow this process down, leading to memory loss. But the neuron regeneration was even slower in the affected olfactory regions.
If you’re experiencing a sudden loss of smell, don’t ignore it. Because this is a fairly common symptom of a COVID-19 infection, start with a COVID test to rule it out.
If your test comes back negative, then go ahead and discuss memory and brain health testing with your doctor. The earlier you detect the disease, the better your chance of slowing its progression and preserving your quality of life.
P.S. Not having trouble with your sense of smell? That’s fantastic news! But don’t wait until you do. Start protecting your brain against Alzheimer’s starting TODAY with this simple drug-free solution.
