ALERT: Your “Smart” Device Causing Cell Damage?
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
Most of us couldn’t imagine living without our “devices” these days. Our smartphones, laptops, and smart TVs fit seamlessly into our daily routines.
If you’re like a lot of folks, you’ve come to rely on them for everything from work to entertainment.
And you certainly don’t suspect they could be causing you any harm.
But history has taught us some of the most innocent-seeming products can be wolves in sheep’s clothing. Take the infamous radioactive iridium watches of the 1920s, for example.
The glowing watch faces were all the rage for a while. The trouble is they were slowly poisoning the people wearing them. And let’s not forget the stylish felt hats of the 18th and 19th centuries that were being manufactured with toxic mercury.
It turns out that now a favorite modern-day device could be the new version of radioactive watches. And now, scientists warn that our risk may grow greater with each passing year…
When you look at an LED computer screen, a wavelength of harmful light called “blue light” enters your eyes.
Blue light can wreak havoc on your health regardless of age. But now researchers say seniors need to be EXTRA cautious.
It turns out that older folks may be MORE susceptible to the damaging effects of the light.
The study, published in the journal npj Aging, revealed that the harm from long-term exposure to blue light coming from phones, computers, and other household products gets WORSE as we age.
In the study, researchers used fruit flies to test how the blue light affected longevity and found that older flies suffered far more than younger ones.
Blue light can, of course, damage the eyes. But that’s not where its detrimental effects end.
The light also appears to harm energy production in the mitochondria or powerhouses of cells ALL over the body. And the damage occurs regardless of whether or not those cells are directly exposed to the light.
So what’s going on here?
Exposure to unnatural blue light appears to change our sleep/wake cycle (circadian rhythm). This then creates a domino effect that damages other cells in the body.
This research is just beginning. There’s still a lot we don’t know. But there’s plenty of evidence that when we continuously expose ourselves to blue light we can cause harm.
You can reduce your risks by limiting your exposure to screens as much as possible. Making simple changes like turning off the screens at dinner time and keeping them off for the rest of the night could have a big impact.
You can also often adjust screens to put out less blue light and wear special glasses designed to block the light.
P.S. Wondering what kind of damage blue light could be causing to your own body? Check out my earlier report “Could Your TV GIVE You Diabetes!?” for just one disturbing risk.
