MAILBAG: A STRONG Case for Multivitamins

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

“Is a multivitamin the best vitamin to take to support overall health?”

 – Beth, Tampa, Florida

Hi Beth,

The short answer is, “YES!” But let’s look at why that’s the case.

When asked, most folks will swear that they eat a healthy diet. But research reveals the truth.

Around 80 percent of Americans DON’T eat enough servings of fruits and vegetables daily. And if you’re among them, you’re in danger of falling short of the necessary vitamins and minerals.

But that’s not the only reason you may need to supplement your diet with a multivitamin…

These days, the soil food crops are planted in is often overworked and lacking in nutrients too.

You see, long ago, scientists figured out that you only really need the minerals potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus to help plants grow faster. The rest, including iron, copper, manganese, chromium, and zinc, don’t affect growth.

So when the soil runs out of those other nutrients, many farmers look the other way. As a result, food grown in that soil lacks vital nutrients.

Then there’s the processed food problem. As a nation, we eat a LOT of junk food.

In fact, processed food consumption has been on a steady climb since the invention of the refrigerator.

Today, most of us eat more processed than non-processed food. And a steady diet of that stuff falls far short of a healthy balanced diet.

Finally, the stressful and fast-paced lives so many of us live these day increases our nutrient needs.

Multivitamins act like an insurance policy. When these nutritional gaps appear, the supplement can fill in the holes.

P.S. THIS vitamin deficiency could send you to an early grave even if you DO take a daily multivitamin. I’ve got all the disturbing details right here.
