[REVEALED]: Bizarre Link Between Shampoo and Diabetes?!
If I were to ask you what you think the risk of getting diabetes from your shampoo is, you’d probably do two things:
- Laugh
- Go looking for another doctor
And to be honest, I wouldn’t blame you. After all, connecting shampooing your hair to blood sugar levels seems absurd.
But not so fast.
The disturbing truth is, scientists HAVE uncovered a stranger-than-fiction link between some personal care products and diabetes risk.
Phthalates are a class of chemicals that make plastics more durable.
If you’re a regular Living Well Daily reader, you’re likely already familiar with them. After all, I’ve warned readers about phthalates many times before.
But you may know them better as “forever chemicals.” (More on that later.)
We’re exposed to phthalates through food and beverage packaging, personal care products, fragrances, and even children’s toys.
And now scientists from the University of Michigan School of Public Health found a connection between personal hygiene products, like soap and shampoo, and diabetes risk.
In fact, according to a stunning article published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, simply using shampoo and soap could increase a woman’s risk of diabetes by up to 60 percent.
The more phthalates the volunteers had in their bloodstream, the more likely they were to develop diabetes by the end of the study period.
You see, phthalates are endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDRs). Which means they can interfere with hormone production.
Various studies have ALREADY linked EDRs to breast and ovarian cancers because they mimic estrogen in the body. Now it looks like we can add diabetes to that list.
Phthalates are known as “forever chemicals” because they’re nearly indestructible. They’ll literally last in the environment for thousands of years. And when they get into your bloodstream, they can accumulate over time.
Fortunately, you CAN reduce your phthalates exposure. Most of which comes through plastics and fragrances.
It’s impossible to avoid all plastic packaging, of course. But you can…
- switch to using bar soaps instead of body washes and shampoos
- choose products packaged in glass and store food in glass or steel containers instead of plastic
- avoid heating foods in plastic containers
- ditch the bottled waters that come in plastic
To find cleaner and safer personal care products check out the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database found here online. You can search for any brand or cosmetic to see what’s truly hiding behind the label.
And another thing…
Here’s what else we’ve been chatting about this week in Living Well Daily…
