Mailbag! NATURAL Summer Allergy Relief

I rarely have allergies but they have been so bad this year, even in the summer.

Are seasonal summer allergies a thing? Is there anything natural that can help?

– Nancy from Milwaukee, WI

Nancy,

Allergies can strike at ANY time of the year. And in fact, MANY folks suffer from summertime allergies.

But hay fever or allergic rhinitis tends to be WORSE in the summer.

Most summer allergies are triggered by high pollen levels from the trees, grasses, and weeds that grow during the warm season.

Summer allergies can cause sneezing, coughing, a runny or stuffy nose, itchy or watery eyes, and fatigue.

The good news is that NATURAL remedies can ease some of your worst allergy symptoms.

  • Carotenoids and other phytonutrients support lung health and are natural antioxidants that can reduce allergy-triggered inflammation. Fruits, veggies, and green tea are all good sources of phytonutrients.
  • Magnesium deficiency is common in folks with allergies. Studies show it can cause a more severe reaction to allergens triggering the histamines behind allergy symptoms to shoot through the roof. Supplementing with magnesium can help. During allergy season, I typically suggest a daily dose of 400–800 milligrams of absorbable magnesium (magnesium citrate, glycinate, or amino acid chelate).
  • IgE antibodies spike when you’re having an allergic reaction. A study found folic acid reduces IgE levels, indicating a drop in allergy symptoms.
  • The quercetin found in various fruits and vegetables is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant that can fight allergy symptoms. Good sources of quercetin include capers, cauliflower, onions, grapes, shallots, tea, tomatoes, and berries. And supplements are available.
  • Probiotics (healthy gut bacteria) are vital for general AND immune system health. Studies show taking probiotics can reduce allergies.
  • Natural anti-inflammatories, such as omega-3 fatty acids, curcumin, and Boswellia, dial down allergy symptoms.
  • Avoid inflammatory processed foods, trans fats, vegetable oils, and added sugars.

Not every natural remedy works for every allergy sufferer. So experiment a bit to see which solutions work best for YOUR allergies.

P.S. One key to living a long, healthy, and comfortable life is to control inflammation. And this sweet “summertime fruit” might be your best ally in this fight.
