Common Cooking Oil SLASHES Dementia Risk?!
We ALL desperately hope to hold on to our memory and wits as we age.
Quick-witted, sharp, shrewd, savvy, on the ball, quick on the draw…
I could go on and on because at least two dozen words and phrases in the English language highlight how incredibly important maintaining a steel-trap mind is to us.
But you might think making this dream a reality requires travel to some far-flung land.
Or perhaps the fix can be found by scaling a distant mountaintop to pluck a brain-protecting plant from its barren hiding spot.
And sure, you could try that if you wanted to…
But the truth is, traveling from where you sit RIGHT NOW to your PANTRY might be all it takes to protect your precious brain power and avoid dementia.
That’s right. The elusive elixir of brain health may be hiding in your home.
I’m talking about common extra virgin olive oil. It could turn out to be a strong ally in avoiding dementia.
We’ve used olive oil for centuries because of its taste and versatility.
But a study presented at the 2023 America Society of Nutrition’s conference has uncovered ANOTHER reason to eat more olive oil.
Researchers say it could slash your risk of developing dementia.
Scientists analyzed 30 years of data gathered in two large studies involving over 90,000 participants. They found that folks who ate more than half a tablespoon of olive oil daily had a 28 percent reduced risk of dying from brain scrambling dementia.
This wasn’t a cause-and-effect style study. So, it doesn’t definitively prove the source of the brain benefit. However, the researchers suggest the dementia protection likely has something to do with the antioxidant qualities of olive oil.
That’s likely part of the reason. I’ll give you no arguments there. But the fact is, olive oil is very different from almost any other liquid oil you eat.
Unlike vegetable oils, olive and avocado oils (technically FRUIT oils) don’t contribute to chronic inflammation. They’re the only two liquid oils I recommend to my patients.
The researchers suggest you substitute olive oil for the margarine or mayonnaise you typically eat to get your daily tablespoon of olive oil.
That’s an excellent idea. After all, prior research has ALREADY demonstrated replacing vegetable oil with extra virgin olive oil can improve cognitive function in seniors.
But you should also trash any other liquid oils in your kitchen (besides avocado) and switch to olive oil for all your cooking needs.
