Artificial Light HARMS Your Health [SHOCKING!]
Nature almost always gets it right.
But when humans try to follow in its footsteps…well, let’s just say we OFTEN fail miserably.
A glaring example is how we try to mimic daylight in our homes. Artificial lights just don’t cut it to support our health.
And now a new study reveals one MORE critical reason to embrace NATURAL sunlight.
If you’re a regular Living Well Daily reader, I’m sure you’ve seen me sing the praises of sunlight.
Getting enough natural sunshine is VITAL for continued good health. That’s ESPECIALLY true at this time of year when the sun moves lower in the sky and we begin to spend far less time outdoors.
As you likely already know, vitamin D is created when sunlight strikes our skin. But that’s not the only reason sunshine is so vital. There’s new evidence that sunshine ALSO assists with blood sugar control.
The research published in the journal Diabetologia found that blood sugar levels are better managed when people are regularly exposed to natural light.
For the study, volunteers were randomly assigned to spend their workdays under…
- natural sunlight from windows, or
- artificial LED lights.
The participants were then switched over to the other light source.
Researchers found that blood sugar levels stayed within the normal range for measurably longer during the natural daylight intervention than during the artificial light intervention.
The researchers say our circadian rhythm is at the heart of the issue.
This 24-hour internal body clock regulates our sleep and wake cycles. And it plays a vital role in everything from digestion to the release of hormones.
Light exposure heavily influences our circadian rhythm, and it can fall out of sync when you don’t get enough natural sunlight. And when this happens, your risk of metabolic diseases, like type 2 diabetes, starts climbing.
Natural sunshine is the BEST environmental cue for our circadian clock. But most folks spend the majority of their day indoors, constantly exposed to artificial light.
The solution is simple. For better blood sugar control, whether you have diabetes or not, spend MORE time outdoors exposing your skin to sunlight.
And don’t worry about those overcast days. The ultraviolet light your body needs to reset your circadian clock can get to you even through clouds.
