BAN Bloat Over the Holidays [TOP 7 Triggers]

The holiday season is jam-packed with tasty temptations, from mouthwatering main courses to decadent desserts.

But loading up on certain foods can leave you feeling bloated and uncomfortable.

Knowing which are MOST likely to trigger tummy troubles BEFORE you indulge can help you keep the celebration going.

When presented with so many rich and delicious options over the holidays, it can be difficult to know which foods are okay to eat (and what to avoid at all costs).

One misstep could leave you feeling miserable and bowing out early with a gassy stomach.

Following are seven of the MOST common bloating trigger foods

  1. Beans: Beans contain oligosaccharides, a carbohydrate that the body can’t fully digest. This leads to gas and bloating. Eating beans, lentils, peas, and soybeans can cause uncomfortable fullness. Save them for at-home meals, or keep your portions small.
  2. Carbonated beverages: The carbonation in sodas, sparkling water, and beer creates gas bubbles that can get trapped in the digestive system, resulting in bloating. Choose water instead. Drop in a slice of lemon or lime to keep it festive.
  3. Dairy: Lactose-intolerant people lack enough lactase enzymes to fully digest milk sugars. This leads to bloating and gas after eating dairy foods like milk, ice cream, and cheese. Aged cheeses tend to be easier to digest.
  4. Cruciferous vegetables: Broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and other cruciferous veggies are healthy. But it may be best to avoid them at parties and holiday gatherings. They contain raffinose, a sugar that remains undigested in the gut. Cooking these vegetables can help reduce bloating.
  5. Wheat: The gluten in wheat bread, cereals, pasta, and baked goods can be hard to digest for sensitive folks. Gluten can irritate the intestinal lining and cause painful bloating. Choose gluten-free grains instead.
  6. Fried foods: High-fat fried foods like French fries, onion rings, and fried chicken delay stomach emptying. Lingering fat leads to abdominal distension and discomfort.
  7. Apples: The high fiber content in apples can trigger bloating in some folks. The natural fruit sugars fructose and sorbitol can also lead to extra gas production.

Let’s face it. It’s the holidays. We’re ALL going to indulge a bit. But no one wants to feel like a balloon in the Macy’s parade afterward.

Dodge the bloat this year by sticking to small portions of these seven gas-producing foods, chewing thoroughly, and eating slowly.
