Drug-Free Vertigo Solutions Stop the Spin
“Is there anything I can take against vertigo?”
– Stefan
Hi Stefan,
First, let’s clear up a common misconception. Vertigo isn’t a condition but a symptom of various underlying issues, from inner ear problems to migraines.
Make sure your healthcare provider works with you to understand the root causes.
Vertigo, of course, can leave you feeling off-balance, nauseous, and downright miserable. Medical treatments are available, but many folks find relief with natural remedies, so it’s an excellent place to start.
Following are the drug-free approaches that have worked most often to relieve vertigo for my own patients:
- The Epley Maneuver: This head and body movement sequence can help reposition the crystals in your inner ear, which often cause vertigo. Studies show it can be up to 80 percent effective in treating certain types of vertigo.
To do it, sit down on a bed. Turn your head 45 degrees to your right. Quickly lie back, keeping your head turned. Then, turn your head 90 degrees to the left without raising it. Next, turn your head and body another 90 degrees to the left into the bed. Sit up on the left side.
You can find videos online if you need help picturing the procedure.
- Ginger: This powerful root isn’t just for settling stomachs. Research suggests ginger may help reduce the dizziness and nausea associated with vertigo. Try ginger tea or supplements.
- Vitamin D: Some studies have linked low vitamin D levels to vertigo. Getting enough sunlight or taking a supplement to raise sagging D levels might help keep you steady.
- Staying Hydrated: Dehydration can worsen vertigo symptoms. Make sure you drink water throughout the day.
Monitor your urination schedule to determine if you’re drinking enough water. You should be going at least every two hours. And when you go, your urine should be a light-straw color—not necessarily clear, but definitely not bright yellow.
- Acupressure: Applying pressure to specific points on your body might help alleviate vertigo symptoms. The PC6 point on your inner wrist is a popular target.
To find P6, look at the inside of your wrist and make a fist. Two tendons will pop up. Place three of your fingers from your other hand on the inside of the wrist, with your middle finger lining up with the crease of your wrist. P6 should now be directly under your pointer finger. Gently pressing on this spot for about 30 seconds can help relieve vertigo in some folks.
- Essential Oils: Some people find relief by inhaling peppermint or ginger essential oils. While more research is needed, anecdotal evidence suggests it’s worth a try.
As always, listen to your body and consult a healthcare professional if things aren’t improving.
P.S. Superstar vitamin SLASHES vertigo risk up to 45%.
