
Mailbag: Room Won't Stop Spinning? Do THIS First
“I’m dealing with vertigo issues, lightheadedness, and dizziness. As recently as this last Saturday I had multiple occurrences throughout the day.
Is there anything I can do for this?
I’m 69 and in good health. I work out 4 to 5 times a week.”

Hi Spinning,
When patients approach me with similar complaints, I immediately put on my detective hat.
I explain what they’re experiencing could be one of three distinct conditions—each with slightly different symptoms, causes, and solutions.
Our first step is to figure out which one of the three they’re likely battling:
True Vertigo:
- Feels like the room is spinning
- Often caused by inner ear issues (like BPPV when calcium crystals move into the semicircular canals)
- Can be triggered by specific head movements
- May come with nausea
Lightheadedness:
- More of a “floating” or “woozy” feeling
- Often linked to blood pressure or blood sugar
- Can be triggered when standing up quickly
- Can be caused by dehydration
Dizziness:
- General feeling of unsteadiness
- Could be related to medications
- Might be connected to vision or neurological issues
- Can be caused by neck problems
Once we determine what the most probable culprit is, we can move on to the natural solutions that are most likely to ease their symptoms:
For true vertigo:
- Ginger root (helps with associated nausea)
- Ginkgo biloba (improves inner ear circulation)
- The Epley maneuver (specific head movements used to treat BPPV)
- Vitamin D (vital for inner ear health)
For lightheadedness:
- Hydration with electrolytes
- B-complex vitamins
- Adaptogenic herbs like rhodiola
- CoQ10 for circulation
For general dizziness:
- Magnesium (helps with nerve function)
- Alpha-lipoic acid (when linked to low blood pressure)
- Acupuncture
- Neck exercises if tension-related (look online for instructions)
When a patient is very active, or works out regularly, I typically advise them to be sure they are staying hydrated before, during, and after exercising. I also remind them to practice proper breathing during workouts, not to get up too quickly after floor exercises, and to take adequate rests between sets.
For active seniors I also recommend they track their blood pressure, especially during and after exercise. They should also discuss inner ear function, neck alignment issues, and any potential medication side effects with their doctor.
Remember, while these natural approaches can help, sudden or severe dizziness or vertigo should always be evaluated by a healthcare provider to rule out serious causes.
