Ancient Greek “Bath Trick” Controls Blood Sugar?
Dear Reader,
Most of the time when I read studies, they ask you to sacrifice something – especially if you have diabetes.
“Give up sugary foods,” “ditch the soda”, etc.
And that often is the case if you’re diabetic or have blood sugar control problems.
But if you fall into this category, you’ll want to pay attention…
Because I recently came across a study that shows how a fun “bath trick” – all the way from Greece — is actually GREAT for your blood sugar – no sacrifice required!
What’s both enjoyable AND great for your blood sugar?
A leisure activity that’s popular this time of year and well into the winter months… a hot tub!
The earliest hot tubs were called caledras, and could be found in Icaria, a Greek island back in 4th century BC.
A recent study, presented at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, found that diabetics who used hot tubs often had better blood sugar control, better blood pressure, and better body weight than people those who did not partake in the warm soak.
In fact, the more hot–tubbing they did, the more their blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight improved!
It’s been known for a long time that heat therapy is great for your health – it’s why I’ve always suggested saunas too. There are studies out of Finland that show people who use a sauna often have fewer heart attacks, but also lower in fasting blood sugar and hemoglobin A1C (a measure of long-term blood sugar control).
For this study, researchers wondered if hot tubs could have the same effects.
Japan is a country where bathing is part of the culture, so the study team looked at 1,297 patients with type 2 diabetes and found that the more they used a hot tub, the better their health.
The good news about this is that hot tubs are (generally) more available than saunas. You can find them in your local Community Center, pool, and even your neighbor’s backyard.
Hot tubs can be a bit pricey, but if you’re looking to buy it would certainly be money well spent. Your health can definitely improve with regular use.
Alongside spending some time relaxing in a hot tub, consider also taking care of your blood sugar by exercising, eating a low-carb diet, and maintaining a healthy weight. You can also take berberine, curcumin, and chromium supplements to help.
P.S. Do you have high blood sugar? If you’re not sure, there are some tell-tale signs to decode your blood sugar levels. Find out all the info here.
