Asthma Relief Found on Your Plate?!
Dear Reader,
Asthma is a chronic obstructive disease of the lungs. Even worse… more and more people are suffering from it.
The chance that your mainstream medical doctor will have anything to help your asthma (that isn’t incredibly harmful or shortens your life) is almost zero.
But there IS something you can do to help your asthma is a big way – and without any side effects.
A recent study, published in the journal Immunity, found that people with asthma can greatly reduce their symptoms by going on a ketogenic or low-carb diet.
The study team found that asthma patients who switched to a keto diet had significantly reduced inflammation in their respiratory tracts.
So how does this work?
Well, carbohydrates in general (and sugars specifically) have long been known to increase inflammation. But exactly how they increased asthma symptoms was unknown.
Asthma patients typically react to even low concentrations of allergens. This reaction is usually severe inflammation of the lung’s bronchi. This, along with increased mucus production, makes breathing much more difficult for those suffering from asthma.
This extreme reaction to even slight allergens is mediated by cells in your immune system called Innate Lymphoid Cells (ILCs).
The ILCs protect your lungs and produce inflammatory messages (which normally cause a brief rush of inflammation that quickly dies out), BUT, if you have asthma, this reaction is much stronger and longer than normal.
So, the scientists in the study switched experimental animals to a ketogenic diet and watched as the ILCs calmed down.
The reason for this has to do with the way cells get energy. When we eat a normal high-carbohydrate diet, Innate Lymphoid Cells get their energy from the sugar molecule glucose.
However, when you switch to a keto diet, those same cells now have to get their energy from ketones.
And it is that switch which tends to calm the ILCs down. What’s more, the over–activity of the cells go down and down goes the inflammation and mucus production.
Now that scientists have tried a low-carb diet in animals, they are moving on to trying humans. But you don’t have to wait – there are plenty of other great reasons to switch from sugar-burning to fat burning in your body.
