“Bathroom Habit” SCRUBS Away IBD?!

Dear Reader,

About three million people in United States have inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

This painful chronic stomach condition is generally caused by an imbalance in the gut microbiome (that collection of microorganisms which help maintain our digestive health and overall health).

If you suffer from IBD, you already know miserable it can make daily life. And I’m sure you know the common suggestions for a healthy microbiome: eat better and take a good probiotic.

But here is something you may be missing… something that could SCRUB away your IBD symptoms for good.

I’m talking about brushing your teeth

Actuallyit’s more than just brushing your pearly whiteswhat you really need is to maintain overall, good oral hygiene.

Here’s what a new research study, published in the journal Cell, found about the root of gut inflammation and problems with the microbiome…

The first is periodontitis – which is gum disease (you have this if you brush or floss and your teeth bleed)

Periodontitis creates an unhealthy imbalance in your mouth’s microbiome. And those bacteria cause inflammation which sends bad bacteria down your gut every time you swallow

The researchers don’t believe periodontitis directly CAUSES inflammatory bowel disease, but that it aggravates the symptoms

What the research team really found was that periodontitis actually upregulates your immune system, and that’s what causes damage to your gut

You see, your immune system is responding to the infection in your mouth and that cross reacts with tissue in your gut, producing the symptoms of IBD

So, how do you keep your mouth healthy and free of periodontitis?

Dr. Scott’s Healthy Mouth Protocol:

  • Stop the Sugar: If you need another reason to stop sugar, here it is. The bacteria in your mouth explodes after you eat something sugary.  During that explosion, bacteria build plaques (that film you feel on your teeth). The more plaque-building bacteria do, the more likely they will make a home under your gums (eventually leading to periodontitis).
  • Salt Water Rinse: Doctors used to recommend salt-water rinses for many conditions. I think salt-water rinses are a great idea–many bacteria cannot survive under salty conditions. Brushing your teeth with salt is another good way to fight gingivitis.
  • Tea Tree Oil Rinse: Tea tree is a great antibiotic. There are mouthwashes with tea tree oil in them I recommend for people with gingivitis (don’t use the straight oil–it can be too harsh). They also make toothpaste with tea tree as an ingredient.
  • Olive Leaf Extract: Look for olive leaf in a mouth wash or toothpaste, but I also recommend taking it internally as a supplement as well.

Add to the above brushing at least three times a day and flossing as often as possible, and you have the recipe for improving IBD.
