Calm Anxiety WITHOUT Drugs (Easy!)
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
There is a plague of anxiety sweeping the nation.
And who could blame us? Anyone with half a brain SHOULD feel anxious about the state of the world.
But like any other epidemic, just because something is going around doesn’t mean you should accept it.
More importantly, having anxiety does massive damage to your body and brain that worsens as you age.
You may have gotten comfort from over-the-counter fixes, prescription drugs, or even alcohol… but unfortunately, none of these calms anxiety long-term.
In fact, many of those “fixes” end up making anxiety worse over the long haul (not to mention living with the side effects!).
How about trying a drug-free solution that sends anxiety packing instead?
I’m talking about exercise.
A group of researchers from the University of Gothenburg has discovered that simple exercise can effectively minimize symptoms of anxiety.
Their study, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders, followed 286 people with long-term anxiety syndrome. They split the participants into two groups. The first exercised lightly, and the second exercised more intensely.
Anxiety levels dropped for most of the volunteers from “moderate” to “low” after following the program for three months.
And folks who trained at a lower intensity were 3.62 times more likely to see their anxiety symptoms DECREASE compared to non-exercisers.
Even better, those who trained at a greater intensity were 4.88 times more likely to reduce their anxiety.
All of the people in this study did one-hour workouts, three times a week, and mixed cardio and weight training.
While these exercises were more than the National Institutes of Health’s recommendations to get in 20 minutes light exercise daily, the results are remarkable… and make it worthwhile to ramp up your exercise efforts.
Think about anxiety this way: that nervous feeling is your body’s signal to get moving. That’s why I believe so many people benefit from exercise – it’s giving your body what it needs.
As with ANY exercise program, make sure you start slow, check with your doctor beforehand, and get help (like a personal trainer) if you need it.
P.S. If you want to get the most out of your exercise routine, try this “micro exercise” trick. You might even lose some weight too!
