“Clock Habit” RIDS Your Brain of Waste
Dear Reader,
You have a three-pound collection of a gelatin-like substance in your head.
Otherwise known as your brain.
Your Jello–like brain directs your consciousness, helps you make sense of the world, and manages all your body functions (like breathing, beating your heart, digesting your food…).
But just like the rest of your body, your brain accumulates waste (and runs into problems when it doesn’t get to clean itself properly).
There’s one key player when it comes to getting rid of this waste… and it all has to do with this crucial “clock habit.”
Our brain takes up only three pounds of our weight, but uses a large amount of energy, and is ESSENTIAL for everything we are and everything we do.
Now, I’m sure you know how good it feels when you sleep well and how awful it feels when you don’t…
Well, your brain feels the same!
But the problem is, people don’t recognize the importance of a good night’s sleep (especially for our brains).
See, your brain is complex and metabolically active. That activity creates a lot of junk that needs to be removed.
It’s your immune system’s job to clean your brain — but researchers are learning how important sleep is to that cleaning process.
Your brain has a plumbing system called the “glymphatic system.” It is part of your immune system and it’s this system that performs the housecleaning.
And it’s this cleaning process that’s actually one of the MAIN reasons we all need sleep!
Specifically, your body and brain need a certain type of sleep (called REM sleep) to stay squeaky clean.
Now, we’ve known for a long time that lack of sleep increases disease like Alzheimer’s and otherdementias. (In fact, many studies show the relationship between poor sleep and poor cognitive function.)
You’ve probably even heard of amyloid beta – a protein that tends to clog up nerves. It’s the main causeand sign of Alzheimer’s disease. The more amyloid beta in a brain, the worse the Alzheimer’s disease.
And when there isn’t enough sleep, your brain can’t clean out all the junk – leading to amyloids and poor cognitive function.
Researchers have found that during sleep — especially during deeper/REM sleep — the glymphatic system saturates the brain with cleansing fluid.
So there’s a simple solution:
The better you sleep, the less amyloid. Making sure you get a good night’s sleep should be priority #1 if you want to keep your brain healthy.
