Confused About Protein Powders? Read This
So, you’re interested in trying protein powders.
You may be planning on making breakfast smoothies with one. Or perhaps you’ll use it as an afternoon pick-me-up instead.
A high-protein drink can be a great way to start the day because it helps you stay full far longer than a sugary bowl of cereal or a donut. Or, as an afternoon snack, it can energize you and keep you from reaching for a bag of chips or a candy bar.
Plus, protein is good for your health in many ways, including helping you maintain muscle mass.
But choosing one? Well, let’s just say THAT can be beyond confusing.
However, I can help…
Let’s get one thing out of the way immediately. The two BEST types of protein powders are…
- Whey
- Egg
Both have a high “biological value” because they contain all the essential amino acids and are easily absorbed by the body. You can’t go wrong choosing one of these types from a trusted manufacturer.
What about the other options? Well, let’s take a quick look at those.
The next best protein powders are casein and collagen-based ones. They’re sourced from animals and can be helpful for specific needs.
- Casein is often used to recover after exercise.
- Collagen is good for joints, skin, and weight loss.
Plant-based protein powders are becoming increasingly popular. But in my experience, they’re all lacking for one reason or another.
- Soy protein is the vegetable protein with the highest biological value. However, many people are allergic to soy, and nearly all soy is genetically modified.
- Hemp, pea, and other vegetable proteins have little protein value and are often expensive.
In the end, whey protein powders are my top recommendation. Whey tastes best, and it’s also best for your body.
