[COVID-19] Bizarre Symptoms SPOTTED in Seniors

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

Have you ever seen one of those sci-fi movies where folks suddenly age faster?

The victim starts off being young, spry, and full of energy, but within days – or minutes! – they mysteriously grow older.

Now it’s not just happening in the movies.

In fact, this bizarre symptom has been spotted in seniors with COVID-19 infections.

And it’s downright terrifying.

We’ve all gotten used to the idea that COVID-19 is a respiratory condition, but the more we investigate, the more we realize that lung infection is just Act I.

COVID’s second act is to speed up aging—including cognitive decline. And two recent studies show just how dangerously quick it can be.

The first one, which appeared in the British Medical Journal, found that older adults were 11 percent more likely to seek medical care for a new condition following a COVID-19 infection. The diseases were varied, and included:

  • respiratory failure,
  • fatigue,
  • memory problems and cognitive difficulties,
  • mental health issues like depression or anxiety,
  • kidney disease,
  • high blood pressure,
  • and heart rhythm disorders.

But that’s just the beginning.

The second study, published in JAMA Neurology, was a little more worrisome. This study looked specifically at the relationship between cognitive decline and COVID-19.

And the researchers found that having severe COVID-19 let to 4.87 times increased risk for early cognitive decline.

It was even worse for late-onset cognitive decline (7.58 times increased risk), and progressive cognitive decline (19 times!).

There was a strong association between how severe the COVID infection was and the aging effects on the body – the worse the disease, the worse the aging.

The researchers in both studies think that COVID-19 is such a large stressor on the body that it may even accelerate diseases.

So, what can you do?

Put simply, try to get as healthy as possible. This means working on any chronic illness you have, like diabetes or heart disease, as well as maintaining a healthy weight.

The damage done from COVID can be lessened by making sure your body is strong enough to fight the infection. Make sure you’re getting enough vitamins and minerals as well as antioxidants.

And as always, get good sleep, exercise, and get outdoors as often as possible.

P.S. The key to a strong immune system lies in this baker’s secret.
