Daily Habit PREVENTS Diabetes?!
Dear Reader,
Diabetes is a health disaster hitting the United States like a tidal wave.
What’s worse? Not only is this disease disrupting daily lives, but poor blood sugar control can reduce your lifespan by 7 to 12 years.
And those final years living with diabetes are usually pretty ugly… you can lose your eyesight, have trouble with your kidneys and your risk for heart disease, stroke, and many cancers skyrockets.
To live a long, healthy life, the key is to avoid diabetes.
And luckily, there is an easy way to increase your odds.
It’s something you should do twice a day. But many people skimp out on this daily ritual: brushing your teeth.
Yes, believe it or not scrubbing your pearly whites can reduce your risk of diabetes. Diabetes and oral hygiene may seem like they are at opposite ends of the health spectrum, but recent research proves they’re actually linked.
A new study, published in the journal Diabetologia, followed 188,013 people for over 10 years. The researchers found that those who had periodontal disease were significantly more likely to develop diabetes.
Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums. If your gums easily bleed when you brush or floss, chances are you have periodontal disease.
There is a strong association between the amount of sugar a person eats and periodontal disease.
Sugar consumption is a strong factor in diabetes, but there is something else happening. And it all boils down to inflammation.
If your gums bleed easily, it’s a hint that bacteria are growing in between your teeth and gums.
Those little critters hide in your gums and reproduce. And if they reproduce enough, they can move down your gums and infect the root of your tooth (and then destroy the ligaments holding your teeth – destroy those ligaments and your teeth fall out).
But, having bacteria grow inside your gums also increases inflammation throughout your body. Putting you on the diabetes fast track.
And that is exactly what the researchers found: toothbrushing matters.
Brushing your teeth reduces the number of bacteria in your mouth, which in turn reduces the amount of periodontal disease and inflammation in your body.
Besides following a low-carb diet, exercising, and taking supplements to support good blood sugar, you should brush your teeth often during the day.
