Defeat Alzheimer’s with Prenatal Vitamins!?
My wife and I were looking through our photo albums the other evening, enjoying a little stroll down memory lane.
We were laughing about the good times, and even some of the bad times, when it struck me…
Not everyone will have this luxury.
See, if you’re a senior, your memory is one of your most valued assets… and one that can be chipped away faster than you might think.
So if you’re worried about your brain, this vitamin should be on your list to take every day.
Because new science has shown that the key to defeating Alzheimer’s disease could be found in prenatal vitamins.
If you’re NOT a pregnant woman, chances are your doctor hasn’t mentioned folate to you.
Most mainstream docs only associate folate with pregnancy, as it’s essential for healthy development and being deficient can cause birth defects.
But now research shows that pregnant women are not the only people who need folate.
A new study, published in Frontiers in Neuroscience, pulled data from 60 studies to figure out the relationship between folate and brain health.
And the researchers found that people who had LOW levels of folate were MUCH more likely to get Alzheimer’s disease.
One of the reasons this may happen is because folate assists in the growth of healthy cells, including brain cells.
So how can you make sure you don’t have a folate deficiency?
First, let’s talk about the difference between folate and folic acid.
Folate is the natural version of vitamin B9. It’s found in leafy greens, broccoli, avocados, beans, and animal products. Folate is essential for building red blood cells, a process called methylation, and DNA synthesis and repair (which is why it’s vital for growing babies).
Folic acid is a synthetic form of vitamin B9, also known as pteroylmonoglutamic acid. Folic acid can be turned into folate in your gut and liver – but this conversion doesn’t work well in everybody. If you are one of the people who don’t convert folic acid into folate very well, folic acid can build up and may increase risk for certain cancers.
It’s best, then, to get folate in its natural form. Make sure you’re getting enough by eating plenty of green vegetables, beans, and healthy proteins.
And if you really want to keep your brain in tip-top shape, make sure you are getting enough omega-3 fish oils, CoQ10, and antioxidants like vitamin A and vitamin C.
