Depression SOLUTION Hiding in Your Gut?!
Dear Reader,
If you’ve suffered with depression (or have watched someone you love fight it), you know how miserable it can make your life.
At times, feeling sad can make things like seeing your family… going to the grocery store… and even getting out of bed seem impossible. Your motivation for just about anything has been zapped out of you.
And one of the most disheartening realities is that the mainstream’s antidepressant drugs won’t do ANYTHING to help. In fact, they often make things worse.
But you don’t need those dangerous drugs to beat depression.
Here’s what you DO need…
If you suffer with depression, what you need is a gut-check.
Yes (as crazy as it might sound) depression can start in your gut.
A recent review of many studies on gut and depression found that both probiotics and prebiotics can dramatically IMPROVE depression!
The study, which was published in the British Medical Journal Nutrition Prevention and Health, combined all good-quality studies published between 2000 and 2019.
The research team found that improving your gut health can go a long way to upgrading your mental health.
That is great news because about seven percent of adults in the United States have at least one depressive episode every year.
Which means you don’t have to rely on mainstream medicine treatment (antidepressants) which DOESN’T actually address the underlying problem.
Many factors cause depression: including biological (your unique chemical makeup), genetic (your family), environment (chemical exposure), your nutritional status, psychological makeup and much more…
But don’t forget inflammation.
Most docs don’t acknowledge that inflammation is a huge cause of depression. The inflammation process harms delicate brain tissue – and having a gut out of balance sends inflammation soaring.
Researchers have known for a long time the connection between your brain and digestive system. This “gut/brain axis” is responsible for much of your health – including how happy or sad you may feel.
This crosstalk between the brain and the gut is so tight that it is hard to separate the two.
The most interesting part of the review is that the studies used many different strains of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria AND they all improved depression!
(Only one strain — L. plantarum 299v, found in the fermented food called kimchi — had no effect on depression, but it did help with cognition).
If you are looking to improve your emotional health, prebiotics and probiotics might just be some of your best tools.
PRObiotics you may know — they’re small microorganisms that live in our digestive system. You can find these in yogurt, any fermented food, or take them as a pill.
PREbiotics are specialized fibers that act as food for healthy bacteria – you can get one of these fibers (called inulin) in leeks, artichokes, and onions.
