Diabetes Patients: Nutrient Lack INCREASES Heart Disease Death 40%

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

Diabetes patients often have to navigate a minefield of potential health problems.

One of these many hazards is heart disease.

You see, heart disease and poor blood sugar control go hand in hand. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that if you have diabetes, you’re TWICE as likely to have a heart attack or stroke as non-diabetics…

No matter your age!

And now, researchers have discovered that this nutrient (or lack thereof) could be SABOTAGING your best efforts…

And increasing your risk of dying from heart disease risk 40 percent!

A new study, published in the journal JAMA Network Open revealed that having low levels of B12 and folate led to a 40 percent increase in dying from heart disease.

The researchers looked at data from over 7,700 people with diabetes. They sorted patients by a number of factors, and found that participants with the lowest amount of B12 and folate in their blood had a higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease during the follow-up period.

Interestingly, the researchers also found that folks with the highest vitamin B12 levels also increased their risk for heart disease.

It proves what I always advise my patients: you should absolutely take supplements, but there is a risk of going overboard.

Aim for around 500mcg of B12 daily if you’re over 50 and 400mcg of folate.

It’s always best, however, to talk with your doctor to determine the correct amount for your nutritional needs.

And if you want to boost your heat health even more, try some of the following supplements.

  • Fish Oil. Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids (like those found in fish oil) can reduce heart disease drastically. Fish oils work by reducing inflammation and softening up arteries so that they stay flexible. I suggest you take between 1,000 and 3,000 mg a day.
  • CoQ10 (CoenzymeQ10). This antioxidant and enzyme is found throughout our bodies and is used for energy production. Since our heart is one of the most energy-hungry organs in our bodies, it needs CoQ10.  CoQ10 has been shown to lower inflammation, reduce blood clots, and help prevent skipped beats like arrhythmias or atrial fibrillation.
  • Vitamin C. It might not be one of the first vitamins you think of when it comes to your heart, but many studies have shown how vital it is for cardiovascular health. Remember that we are one of a few mammals that can’t produce their own vitamin C.

P.S. If you have diabetes and are worried about your heart health, you need to know about this destructive drug.
