Dinner Plate Link to Depression (Disturbing!)
You should know you’re NOT alone if you struggle with feeling blue. After all, depression is the MOST common mental illness in the world.
And unfortunately, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out one of the reasons WHY everyone is feeling so down.
Just five minutes of watching the news these days is enough to make anyone feel unhappy and hopeless. Add in personal struggles, and it’s practically a miracle that 100 percent of us aren’t battling this illness.
But it turns out the state of the world…or your own personal problems… might not be the ONLY thing triggering your depression.
In fact, it could be what’s on your DINNER plate.
Serving Depression for Dinner
Chemical and biological factors can affect how good you feel on any given day. And while your chances of changing the world are pretty small, you CAN modify some of these factors.
One of the BEST changes you can make is to your diet.
If you’re putting ultra-processed foods in your mouth, it’s time to stop.
These junk foods are prepared with low-quality and artificial ingredients. And even worse, they go through manufacturing that strips them of vital nutrients.
Ultra-processed foods include packaged snacks, sugary drinks, fast food, frozen dinners, desserts, and more. You can often spot them by looking at their lengthy “nutrition” labels.
Ultra-processed Foods and Mental Health
A recent study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders took a deep dive into the link between how much ultra-processed food people eat and their mental health.
The researchers focused on the eating patterns and likelihood of “psychological distress” in a group of 13,876 women and 9,423 men.
They found that the folks who ate the MOST ultra-processed foods were 23 percent more likely to have psychological distress than people who ate no or little processed foods.
You’re in good company if you’re wondering what’s happening here. Because while researchers have found a link between these manufactured foods and depression, the exact mechanism is still not well understood.
But there’s no lack of smoking guns to look at, including too much sugar, not enough vitamins and minerals, artificial preservatives, added colors, and other additives.
All that chemical muck is bound to increase inflammation, throw your blood sugar off balance, and harm your sensitive brain.
I’m sure you don’t need more reasons to kick ultra-processed foods out of your life. But if you want to care for your brain and mood, you now have another one.
