I’m talking about eating slower.
YES, eating slower.
According to a recent presentation at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions, people who eat slower are less likely to gain weight or developed metabolic syndrome.
Metabolic syndrome is a catchall term that includes heart disease, diabetes, and stroke risk factors such as poor blood sugar control, high cholesterol, increased abdominal obesity.
For the study, researchers followed 1,083 participants for five years none of which had metabolic syndrome at the beginning of this study.
Participants were divided into three groups: those that ate slow, those that ate normal, and those that ate fast.
At the end of the study, 11.6 percent of the fast eaters had metabolic syndrome, 6.5 percent of the normal eaters had developed the syndrome, and only 2.3 percent of slow eaters had the condition.
We’ve known for a long time that when you eat slower, you tend to feel fuller and not overeat. But we never knew it made metabolic changes in your body.
Eating fast seems to cause bigger jumps in blood sugar which can lead to insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome.
So, slow down and enjoy your meals. It will improve your blood sugar control, keep you from overeating, and help to control your waistline.
