Embrace Your Inner Health Guru
We all know the so-called “rules” of good health. In fact, I bet you could recite them all by heart…
Get eight hours of sleep, eat three square meals a day, drink eight glasses of water. I could go on, but you get the idea.
But what if I told you that your best health advisor isn’t a doctor, nutritionist, or fitness guru?
It’s your OWN body.
Let me explain…
Picture this: It’s barely 7 p.m., and you’re yawning. Your eyelids feel like they’re made of lead. But the clock says it’s too early for bed, right?
Wrong.
The other night, I went to bed before the sun went down. Why? Because I was tired. Simple as that.
And that’s not the only “health rule” I break. I occasionally skip dinner. Shocking, I know. But sometimes, I’m just not hungry.
These might sound like minor rebellions against the established health commandments. But they’re actually powerful examples of something crucial… listening to your body.
Too often, we’re caught in mental traps of our own making. We believe we MUST get precisely eight hours of sleep, drink exactly eight glasses of water, and eat three meals every single day—or else.
But here’s the kicker… your body isn’t a machine that runs on a fixed schedule. It’s a complex, ever-changing biological system with its own innate wisdom.
When you’re tired, your body tells you it needs rest regardless of the time. When you’re not hungry, forcing food down isn’t doing you any favors.
By paying attention to these signals, you’re tapping into a personalized health plan far more powerful and sophisticated than any one-size-fits-all approach.
Now, I’m not suggesting you toss all health guidelines out the window. They exist for a good reason and can be helpful starting points. But they shouldn’t override what your body is clearly telling you.
Here’s how you can start tuning in:
- Sleep when you’re tired, not when the clock says you should. This includes naps. Close your eyes when you need a rest, no matter what time.
- Eat when you’re hungry, not because it’s “mealtime.”
- Drink water when you’re thirsty, not to hit an arbitrary daily quota.
- Move your body when it craves activity, not just when you are “supposed” to exercise.
Now, I’m sure you can think of ways this “tuning in” advice could go wrong. I can too.
You might take so many naps in a day you’re awake all night. Perhaps you never feel like eating meals but always crave ice cream, so that’s all you eat. Or you don’t ever feel like exercising, so you never do.
To this, I say there are times your higher self has to step in and make common-sense decisions about your health.
But, by learning to listen and respond to your internal cues, you’re unlocking a powerful, personalized approach to health that no generic guideline can match.
So, don’t feel guilty the next time you find yourself fighting sleep at 7 p.m. or skipping a meal because you’re not hungry. Pat yourself on the back instead.
You’re not being lazy or unhealthy—you’re tuning into the wisdom of your body’s best health coach.
And that might be the healthiest move you can make.
P.S. Don’t feel like exercising? Get fit (and feel fabulous!) with this “Exercise Snacking” trick.
