FILTHY FACTS About Your Cell Phone
Taking a trip to the bathroom used to be a break from the chaos of daily life. It’s likely at least partially responsible for the nickname restroom.
After all, there wasn’t much to do in that room unless you had a magazine to read.
But nowadays, for many of us, the restroom is anything BUT restful. Instead, we drag the world and its troubles into the bathroom with us when we sit down with our cell phones.
If you know anything about the risks of smartphones, you might ALREADY be worried about regular exposure to radiofrequency radiation, their potential for addiction, and even distracted driving.
But there’s ANOTHER risk we’ve all missed.
When surveyed, most folks admit to using their cell phone while on the toilet. So, it’s no surprise that when scientists test phones, they find a TON of microorganisms crawling on them.
In fact, the average cell phone carries 10 times MORE bacteria than most toilet seats!
But the bathroom isn’t the only place where your phone picks up sickening bugs…
Hand your phone to a kid, use it to help you cook (around raw meat), or just set it down on an unclean surface, and it becomes the perfect home for any number of bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
Some bugs you can pick up in bathrooms are dangerous (like E. coli). Phones have ALSO been shown to harbor Klebsiella, Micrococcus, Proteus, Pseudomonas, Streptococcus, and many more.
Whenever I explain to folks how to keep from catching the latest circulating infection … cold, flu, or COVID, etc. … I always explain that one of the most common ways to get infected is to touch your face.
Studies show most people touch their face between 20 to 30 times an hour. So when you’re also handling a cell phone that’s become home to a bunch of ugly bugs, you have a recipe for getting sick.
To avoid infections, keep your hands away from your face. But you ALSO need to make keeping your cell phone clean a priority. In fact, just like doing laundry or housework, you should put your cell phone on a cleaning schedule.
The US Federal Communications Commission recommends DAILY sanitation of your phone.
Usually, an alcohol-based wipe or a spray (on a soft cloth) with at least 70 percent alcohol is the best way to get the job done. But check with your phone manufacturer to be sure that’s the case with your model.
Another effective option is to invest in a UV sanitizing box or charger. You can pick one up for less than $25 on Amazon.com.
