Five Game-Changing “Hacks” for Optimal Health

The other day, a patient told me she was doing “everything” she could for her health.

When I asked her what she meant, much to my surprise, she told me she stopped using the microwave.

I assure you that’s NOT everything.

Sure, microwaving food has some downsides. But let’s be realistic; avoiding them won’t significantly improve your overall health.

Instead, focus on these five game-changing “hacks” that actually WILL

Of course, giving your microwave the old heave-ho will not harm you, but it won’t improve your overall health either.

Taking on these five heavy-hitting lifestyle changes instead will give you the MOST bang for your buck.

  1. Exercise: First up, get up and move more. Exercise is non-negotiable if you want to live a long, healthy life. I don’t care if it’s a brisk walk, a yoga class, or a full-on gym session—just make sure you unseat your seat and MOVE at least every half hour throughout the day.
  2. Food: Next, take a long, hard look at what you’re eating. Ditch the processed junk, sugary drinks, and excessive alcohol. Instead, load up on veggies, good fats, and plenty of protein.
  3. Rest: Sleep is an all-too-often ignored critical health issue. If you’re not getting enough quality shut-eye, you’re setting yourself up for a world of hurt. Create a relaxing bedtime routine to help you wind down and aim for seven to nine hours of sleep a night.
  4. Connect: Human beings are social creatures. We need to connect with others to thrive. Try to spend more quality time with family and friends, join groups that share your interests, volunteer in your community, and reach out to loved ones regularly by phone, text, and in person.
  5. Stress: Lastly, learn how to manage your stress levels. Chronic stress is a silent killer, wreaking havoc on your body and mind. Find healthy coping methods, like meditation, deep breathing, and pursuing hobbies you love.

Forget about the small stuff and focus on these fundamental lifestyle changes to improve your health instead. Oh, and quit worrying about your microwave!
