Food Additive Gives You Diabetes!?
Dear Living Well Daily Reader,
Day in and day out, I tell my patients one thing…
Food is medicine.
Because if you want to stay strong and healthy, it starts with what you put on your plate.
And just like some of Big Pharma’s meds, certain foods will do nothing but leave you sicker.
In a new study, researchers discovered something downright disturbing.
This food additive could give you diabetes.
Here’s everything you need to know.
******
A new study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine found that feeding mice propionate (a naturally-occurring fatty acid) dramatically increases your blood sugar.
Yes, propionate is natural, but the super-concentrated form that food manufacturers use is nothing short of poison.
Propionate is FDA-approved and has been used in food processing as a mold inhibitor for many years.
Like most food additives, the health effects of propionate were never properly studied.
Until now.
For the research, Harvard University scientists divided 14 healthy people into two groups.
One group ate meals containing 1 gram of propionate, and the other didn’t. Blood samples were taken from all participants both before and after the meal.
At the end, the researchers found that folks who ate the propionate-containing meals had MAJOR blood sugar spikes.
Propionate does this because it increases your levels of three blood sugar-producing hormones:
- glucagon,
- norepinephrine,
- and FABP4.
And all three of those hormone cause sugar to be dumped into your bloodstream.
When you combine these effects with the excessive sugar in processed foods it’s a DOUBLE WHAMMY for your blood sugar.
Your best bet is to ditch as many processed foods as you can. Start focusing on a healthy, blood sugar-lowering diet full of fresh produce, healthy fats, and wild-caught seafood.
