Get Fit (Feel Fabulous!) with “Exercise Snacking”

By now, we ALL know the drill—exercise is vital for healthy aging.

If we want to stick around and have any quality of life, we have to “move it or lose it” daily.

But knowing and doing are two entirely different things when there are always so many things competing for our attention.

Finding the time to fit exercise into a busy day is hard. That’s why I turn to “exercise snacking.”

Exercising snacking is a simple method for sneaking in extra exercise throughout your day. You look for opportunities to move your body while doing other things.

For example, toss in a few jumping jacks while waiting for your coffee to brew, do some stretches during commercial breaks, or turn on some tunes and dance around the house while dusting.

The concept is simple. Instead of carving out a solid hour for the gym (which, let’s face it, often turns into an hour of scrolling through Facebook on the couch instead), you sprinkle in mini-workouts throughout your day.

A set of counter push-ups here, a brisk walk around the block there, and voila! You’ve “snacked” your way to better health.

But does it really work? The science says, “Yes!”

In fact, research reveals these short bursts of activity can…

  • boost metabolism,
  • improve heart health, and
  • enhance brain function.

It’s like hitting the body’s reset button multiple times a day to keep your systems revved up and ready to go.

The beauty of exercise snacking is obvious… its flexible. Stuck in a never-ending volunteer committee meeting? Sneaky calf raises under the desk let you make the most of your time.

Binge-watching your favorite show? Make a game of it and try to fit in 10 squats every time your favorite character appears on screen.

Critics might scoff, saying snacking isn’t “real” exercise. But in a world where sitting is the new smoking, any movement is good movement.

Exercise snacking makes fitness accessible to all, not just gym rats and marathon runners.

So, the next time you find yourself with a spare minute, why not indulge in a little exercise snack?

Your body will reap the health benefits, and who knows, you might just develop a healthy addiction to these bite-sized bursts of energizing exercise.
