Key Facts to Consider BEFORE Trying Marijuana
Lately, I’ve had a lot of people ask me if marijuana is safe, and my answer always is, “It depends…”
You may have lived through the wild days of the 60s and 70s and even experimented with a little weed back then. But the marijuana of today is NOT the same mellow grass you remember.
A recent meta-analysis of studies found that the potency of pot has skyrocketed by a staggering 24 percent since 1975. That means the THC levels—the compound that makes you feel “high”—are through the roof.
And if you think that’s no big deal, think again.
A comprehensive review published in the Journal of the American Medical Association looked at marijuana studies involving over 1,400 people 50 and older.
The researchers linked higher doses of THC to a wide range of negative symptoms, including unclear thinking, distorted perceptions, and a feeling of being on a spinning carnival ride.
Not exactly the “golden years” you had in mind, huh?
Now, I know many folks are tempted to try marijuana for medicinal purposes. And if you’re fighting a serious illness like cancer, it CAN be a godsend.
However, the risks might outweigh the benefits for the average older adult just looking to relax or ease some aches and pains.
Edibles and concentrates might look harmless but can pack a serious punch. One minute, you’re nibbling on an innocent-looking brownie, and the next, you’re in the throes of a full-blown, paranoia-driven panic attack.
Marijuana can be helpful for many people. You just have to be careful. But there are safer options available. CBD extracts, for example, provide many of the therapeutic benefits without the mind-altering effects.
Remember, just because marijuana is legal in some states doesn’t mean it’s risk-free, especially for older adults. The strains available today are a far cry from the relatively mild weed of yesteryear.
So, BEFORE you decide to relive your youth and take a toke, make sure you know what you’re getting into.
