Kidney Stone Culprit Hiding in Your Medicine Cabinet?!
Dear Reader,
If you’ve ever dealt with the pain of a kidney stone before, you know they’re no joke.
So, when a good friend of mine had to repeatedly take their 15-year old son to the emergency room for kidney stones, you can imagine how concerned we all were.
Aside from the fact that, kidney stones are rare in children, they are far from a walk in the park.
His parents asked me if there was anything that could help him; and while I suggested he drink more water, I really didn’t have any other advice.
That is, until a new study crossed my desk that pinpointed a possible culprit…
And it’s one that could be lurking in your medicine cabinet right now.
The study pinned a culprit: antibiotics.
Believe it or not, it turns out that antibiotics are strongly associated with kidney stones.
According to this new study, published in The Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, researchers found that five classes of commonly prescribed antibiotics were associated with increased risk of kidney stones (in everyone, but especially children).
Incredibly, the risk of kidney stones appears to linger for three to five years after taking antibiotics.
This is no joke, especially because American doctors prescribed over 262 million courses of antibiotics just this past year!
The researchers found specific types of antibiotics caused kidney stones: sulfas (Bactrim, Gantanol); cephalosporins (Keflex); fluoroquinolones (Cipro); nitrofurantoin/methenamine (Macrobid, Hiprex); and broad-spectrum penicillins.
Those antibiotics were linked to a 1.3 to 2.3 times greater risk for kidney stones.
The risk is greatest within three to six months following an antibiotic regime but continued for three to five years.
This is backed up by other studies that show in the last 30 years kidney stone incidence has skyrocketed by 70 percent among children and adolescents.
Antibiotics should always be your last choice of medicine – no matter your age. (When you’ve exhausted all other choices).
And, if you do take antibiotics, make sure you take them take care of your microbiome by taking probiotics.
