Mail: Waking Up Stiff and Achy? Here’s Why
“My joints have been aching more than usual lately, especially in the mornings. What could be causing this, and what can I do to alleviate the pain?”
—Evelyn
Hi Evelyn,
When a patient comes to me with similar symptoms, my first thought is they’re most likely dealing with arthritis.
Typically, inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid, causes joint pain that tends to be worse in the morning.
When you’re sleeping, your body isn’t moving around as much, which can cause the joints to stiffen.
Plus, during sleep, your body releases certain hormones that can trigger inflammation. So, when you wake up and start moving, you might feel extra stiffness and joint pain.
Here’s a list of some natural solutions that I typically advise my patients to try to manage their painful arthritis symptoms:
- Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3s in fatty fish (like salmon) have anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce joint pain and stiffness.
- Turmeric: This spice contains curcumin, a powerful natural anti-inflammatory. You can either add turmeric to your favorite dishes or take it as a supplement.
- Ginger: Another anti-inflammatory spice, ginger can be eaten fresh, dried, or as a tea.
- Boswellia: Also known as Indian frankincense, this herb can reduce inflammation and improve joint function.
- Green tea: Antioxidant-rich green tea naturally reduces inflammation and slows cartilage breakdown.
- Exercise: Low-impact activities like swimming, biking, and yoga improve joint flexibility and reduce stiffness.
- Hot and cold therapy: Heat can relax muscles and improve circulation, while cold can reduce inflammation and numb pain. Stick to 15-minute sessions with a hot or cold pack, and be sure the temperature isn’t too extreme.
- Massage: Gentle massage can help reduce pain, relax muscles, and improve range of motion.
- Acupuncture: This traditional Chinese medicine technique can reduce pain and improve joint function.
- Mind-body practices: Stress-reducing techniques like meditation, deep breathing, and tai chi may help manage pain and improve overall well-being.
If you suspect you may have inflammatory arthritis, be sure to discuss it with your doctor or a rheumatologist.
Eventually, these conditions can cause permanent joint damage. So, it’s essential to get a proper diagnosis and begin managing the inflammation as soon as possible.
