Mailbag: 3-Pronged Attack CRUSHES Diabetes at the Source

They told me I might have diabetes, so I would like to know how I can battle and eliminate diabetes.”

—Fighting Back

Hi Fighting,

You have the exact right attitude—it will be your best weapon in this battle.

Let’s face it, receiving a diabetes diagnosis is disturbing. You’re sitting there, shocked and wondering what it means for your future.

But before you know it, you’re being shoved out the door of your doctor’s office with a prescription for diabetes medication, instructions to buy a glucometer, and some vague advice to “watch your diet.”

This is a time for action because there’s plenty you can do to crush this condition, especially if you’re prediabetic or in the early stages of diabetes.

Unfortunately, doctors aren’t trained to reverse diseases like diabetes. They’re taught to prescribe medications to control symptoms while the underlying metabolic dysfunction continues to worsen.

But I always explain to my patients that not only can diabetes be managed—often so tightly that it hardly affects your daily life—it sometimes can be put into remission. The key to success is to get started right away with targeted lifestyle changes.

I typically advise my patients to start with an all-natural, three-pronged reversal protocol:

Nutritional warfare: Eliminate the refined carbohydrates and sugars that are damaging your insulin receptors. Focus on fiber-rich non-starchy vegetables, clean proteins (such as wild-caught fish and pasture-raised poultry), and healthy fats (such as olive oil and avocados) that stabilize blood glucose instead of spiking it.

Movement medicine: Regular exercise doesn’t just “help with diabetes”—it rebuilds insulin sensitivity at the cellular level. Aim for 30 minutes daily of combined aerobic and resistance training to begin to reverse metabolic damage and maintain optimal blood sugar control.

Targeted supplementation: Nature provides several natural compounds that can improve blood sugar control with fewer side effects than diabetes drugs:

  • Berberine was proven to be as effective as metformin in a randomized clinical trial (500 mg with meals)
  • Alpha-lipoic acid was shown to improve insulin sensitivity in several studies (300 to 600 mg daily)
  • Chromium helps cells respond better to insulin, improving blood sugar levels (200 mcg daily)
  • Magnesium is essential for proper glucose metabolism (300 to 400 mg daily)

I tell my diabetes patients if they want to go beyond basic management, here’s what works:

  • Stress management: Chronic stress raises cortisol, which increases blood sugar. Daily meditation, deep breathing exercises, or gentle yoga can help lower stress hormones and stabilize glucose levels.
  • Quality sleep: Poor sleep disrupts insulin sensitivity faster than a sugar binge. Seven to nine hours in a cool, dark room, with consistent sleep-wake times, supports your body’s natural glucose control.
  • Intermittent fasting: When done properly, time-restricted eating gives your insulin receptors a chance to reset their sensitivity. Start with a 12-hour overnight fast (such as 7pm to 7am) and gradually extend your fasting window as you feel comfortable.

You have a choice. You can spend your life managing a chronic condition, or you can commit to a new lifestyle and invest three to six months in implementing these changes to begin reversing the metabolic damage and seeing significant improvements.

Be sure to work with your healthcare provider to discuss what will work best for you, monitor your progress, and adjust your approach as needed.

P.S. The diabetes game-changer your doc forgot to mention.
