Mailbag: Boost Your Blood Pressure Routine NATURALLY

What are the best supplements to use for treating high blood pressure when one is currently taking blood pressure medication?

—Under Pressure

Hi Under,

I’ll be the first to admit I’m skeptical of certain so-called “important” medical measurements. However, blood pressure is not one of those.

It’s in everyone’s best interest to keep their blood pressure in check.

When my patients are interested in naturally maintaining healthy blood pressure, I usually share several effective options with them:

  • Potassium: This mineral helps balance sodium levels and supports healthy blood pressure. Potassium-rich foods include bananas, potatoes, spinach, and avocados.
  • Magnesium: This mineral helps relax blood vessels, supporting better blood pressure. Magnesium-rich foods include nuts, seeds, leafy greens, and whole grains.
  • Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10): This antioxidant can reduce blood pressure and counteract some blood pressure medication side effects.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: Found in fatty fish and fish oil supplements, omega-3s reduce inflammation and support heart health.
  • Garlic: Both as a food and a supplement, garlic improves blood pressure.
  • Stress reduction: Chronic stress is linked to high blood pressure. Meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, and tai chi can promote relaxation, lowering stress hormones that can raise blood pressure.
  • Regular exercise: Thirty minutes of moderate activity most days of the week can lower your blood pressure by five to eight points. Try brisk walking, swimming, cycling, or dancing to strengthen your heart while helping control blood pressure.

Remember to consult your doctor before taking any new supplements, as some may interact with your current medications.

Also, I suggest whenever you make any changes to your supplement or exercise routine, you monitor you blood pressure at home. And never adjust or stop your prescribed medications without medical supervision.
