Mailbag: Dizziness and Aging Demystified

Lately I’ve been experiencing frequent dizzy spells and feel unsteady on my feet. Is it a normal part of aging?

Hi Robert,

Whenever a patient, regardless of age, asks me about frequent dizziness or unsteadiness, my short answer is, “No, it’s NOT a normal part of aging.”

Our bodies do go through changes as we get older, of course. But dizziness or balance issues shouldn’t be chalked up to being a senior. It’s more complicated than that.

These symptoms could be caused by MANY different things, and it’s crucial to get to the bottom of what’s going on to find the best way to manage them.

Some common culprits behind dizziness and balance issues include…

  • inner ear problems,
  • medication side effects,
  • low blood pressure,
  • vertigo, and
  • anemia

As we age, our muscles naturally lose strength and flexibility. This process, sarcopenia, can start as early as when we’re in our 30s and becomes more noticeable over time.

When our muscles aren’t as strong as they used to be, it can affect balance and stability, making us feel more unsteady on our feet.

Additionally, age-related changes in the nervous system can impact how the brain communicates with the muscles. This can lead to slower reflexes and reduced coordination, which can also contribute to feelings of dizziness and instability.

However, while muscle changes are a natural part of aging, they don’t mean you have to accept feeling dizzy or unsteady as your new normal.

Proper evaluation from a healthcare professional is vital to pinpoint the exact cause.

I strongly encourage anyone feeling symptoms like these to schedule an appointment with a doctor as soon as possible. They can give you a thorough check-up, review your medical history, and run some tests if necessary to get a clearer picture of what’s making you feel this way.

Then, you can work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs.

P.S. Waning muscle strength can be a hidden warning.
