Mailbag: Dizzy Spells? Your Neck Might Be the Culprit
“Could a stiff neck cause vertigo at times?”
-Stiff and Spinning
Dear Spinning,
Occasionally, one of my patients will experience vertigo and a stiff neck simultaneously. Naturally, they want to know if the issues are connected.
I explain that while a stiff neck doesn’t directly cause vertigo, there’s an interesting connection between neck issues and dizziness that IS worth exploring…
A stiff neck can sometimes be associated with cervical vertigo or cervicogenic dizziness. This occurs when problems in the neck, such as muscle tension, joint dysfunction, or misalignment, interfere with the sensory information your body uses to maintain balance.
In those cases, here’s what might be happening:
- The neck contains important sensory receptors that help your brain understand your body’s position in space. When these are irritated or not functioning correctly due to stiffness, it can lead to dizziness or vertigo.
- Tension in the neck muscles can potentially compress blood vessels or nerves, affecting blood flow to the inner ear or brain stem—areas that are crucial for balance.
- Misalignments in the upper cervical spine could affect the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which may impact your sense of balance.
To address this naturally I typically advise my patients to consider the following:
- Gentle neck stretches and exercises to improve flexibility and reduce tension
- Applying heat to relax tight muscles
- Trying acupressure or massage to release tension points
- Exploring chiropractic care to address potential misalignments
- Practicing good posture to prevent neck strain
- Using ergonomic pillows to support proper neck alignment during sleep
Remember, a healthcare professional should always evaluate persistent vertigo or dizziness to rule out more serious conditions.
However, after a consultation, natural approaches could offer real relief for occasional bouts of vertigo related to neck stiffness.
