Hi Robert,
Whenever anyone asks me what the best things they can do to support their health as they grow older, I always tell them three things: exercise, sleep, and eat well.
But if I HAD to choose just one, EXERCISE gives you the most benefits.
When you exercise, you actually get a bit of all three benefits. Exercise improves sleep. And when you sleep well, you tend to eat better.
But beyond that, exercise has a ton of other benefits.
When you move your body, you create low-level inflammation. That may not sound positive at first. But this is the GOOD kind of inflammation.
It helps clear out waste products and leads to overall lower inflammation.
You see, when you get your heart pumping, you clear waste from your cells and refill them with fresh oxygen. If you exercise enough, you also induce a low-level artificial fever which can rid your body of harmful pathogens.
But the BIGGEST benefit of exercise for older folks is building and maintaining muscle mass.
This is critical because the amount of muscle you have in your body is one of the greatest predictors of longevity.
So, get out there and get your heart pumping and those muscles moving!
