Mailbag: Ease Invisible Pain and Fatigue NATURALLY

Why isn’t there more research on fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome? It’s mainly a woman’s condition and too many health professionals tell us “It’s all in your head,” or words to that effect.

—Fatigued and Fuming
Hi Fuming,

Your frustration over the lack of research and dismissive attitudes when it comes to fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is completely valid.

In fact, you’ve hit on a critical point—there’s a clear gender bias in how mainstream medicine treats these conditions.

Here’s what makes this medical gaslighting particularly maddening…

Objective physical evidence exists that they’re not “all in your head.” Research (though not nearly enough of it!) shows that people with fibromyalgia and CFS have measurable differences in:

  • Pain processing in the central nervous system
  • Inflammation markers
  • Mitochondrial function
  • Immune system responses

But the inequities don’t end there—there are also funding disparities. Conditions affecting similar numbers of people (but more men) often receive significantly more research funding.

It’s as if there’s an unwritten rule that women’s health issues deserve less attention!

I’ve fought against this bias my entire career, and there’s still a long way to go. While we wait for mainstream medicine to catch up, here are some natural approaches that my fibromyalgia and CFS patients have found helpful:

Mitochondrial support: There’s evidence of impaired energy metabolism and mitochondrial dysfunction in fibromyalgia and CFS. This means your cells’ energy factories might need some extra TLC. These nutrients may help…

  • CoQ10
  • B-complex
  • Alpha-lipoic acid
  • D-ribose

Anti-inflammatory herbs: Inflammation plays a role in both conditions, with studies documenting elevated pro-inflammatory cytokines and neuroinflammation. These herbs can help you fight back…

  • Turmeric with black pepper
  • Boswellia
  • Ginger
  • Holy basil

Adaptogenic herbs: Fatigue plays a central role in fibromyalgia and CFS. The following adaptogens can help boost overall energy levels…

  • Rhodiola
  • Ashwagandha
  • Cordyceps
  • American ginseng

Many of my patients have also found that exercise is critical for managing their condition.

But remember, it’s vital for you to find the balance that’s best for you. Too much exercise can trigger flares, while too little can lead to stiffness.

Water exercises or gentle yoga can be good starting points. Just be sure to pace yourself so you don’t become more fatigued than when you started.

And don’t forget how critical rest is for folks with fibromyalgia and CFS. Aim for at least seven hours of quality sleep each night.

Don’t let anyone tell you your illness is “all in your head.” Your symptoms and suffering are real, and you deserve real support and treatment.

Keep advocating for yourself and trust your own experience. You know your body better than any dismissive doctor ever will.

Consider finding a naturopathic or functional medicine practitioner who actually listens and understands that these conditions involve real physical dysfunction—not just stress or depression (though dealing with chronic illness certainly can affect mental health).

Remember, healing is a journey, not a destination. When you combine evidence-based natural approaches with self-compassion, you will take meaningful steps towards reclaiming your well-being—even when the medical establishment has let you down.

P.S. Potent vitamin duo curbs fibromyalgia pain.
