MAILBAG: Easy Ways to LOSE a Few Pounds
“My wife is driving me crazy telling me I need to lose weight. I walk our dog 15 minutes a day and like to think I eat relatively healthy. Is there anything I should completely avoid or be doing to lose a few?”
– Walter from Lansing, Michigan
Hi Walter,
Ironically, I spotted your question on the most romantic day of the year. Because nothing can ruin a Valentine’s Day mood like an argument with the spouse.
Men face two significant obstacles when it comes to their health:
- First, guys are notoriously bad about going to see the doctor. In fact, by some estimates, only 30 percent of patient visits are made by men.
- Second, men tend to live shorter lives. On average, guys live five to seven years less than women.
So, when someone who loves you is nagging you to lose a few pounds, it’s probably a good idea to listen. Because, the truth is, they’re doing it BECAUSE they love you and want you to stick around for a LONG time.
(Understanding that ought to restore a little of the romance.)
One of the best ways to lose a few extra pounds… ESPECIALLY for men… is to focus on building muscle.
You can painlessly do this by extending your dog walks to an hour and picking up the pace to get your heart pumping for about 10 percent of the time.
You can also try lifting weights. I usually suggest to anyone who wants to start lifting to go to a gym or community center and work with a trainer. Once you get the basics down, you can switch to home workouts if you prefer.
(Be on the lookout later this week for an easy tip on increasing your muscle force to get even MORE out of exercise.)
Plus, it’s always a good idea to cut back on sugar and alcohol. Both are full of unwanted carbs, which pack on the pounds.
In fact, if you put those two things together—lowering your sugar and alcohol intake and increasing your exercise—I can practically guarantee your wife will be thrilled with the results.
