Thank you for your Living Well Daily newsletter! Can you please share any thoughts on how to support prostate health?

Especially getting up and going to the bathroom twice a night. The stream is not as strong as it once was; it takes longer to empty. Thanks!

Hi Shift,

Thank you for being a regular reader.

I’ve got good news. There are plenty of natural remedies that support prostate health and help you stay in top form as you age.

When my patients ask about prostate health, I explain that a comprehensive approach combining targeted nutrition, diet, and lifestyle changes often yields the best results.

Starting with supplements—here ‘s what the research says:

  • Saw Palmetto: This palm extract is probably the most extensively studied natural remedy for prostate health. It can ease the urinary symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate. Look for a standardized extract from a manufacturer you trust.
  • Lycopene: This powerful antioxidant—found in cooked tomatoes, watermelon, and pink grapefruit—supports prostate health and may lower prostate cancer risk.
  • Zinc: This essential mineral is vital for proper prostate function, with pumpkin seeds being one of the best natural sources.
  • Beta-sitosterol: Studies show this plant compound, found in nuts and seeds, reduces inflammation and slows prostate growth, easing symptoms like frequent urination.
  • Green Tea: Rich in catechins like EGCG, green tea helps protect sensitive prostate tissues, and may reduce cancer risk. Aim for two to three cups daily of high-quality green tea.
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: These healthy fats reduce inflammation throughout the body, including the prostate. Wild-caught salmon, sardines, or a high-quality fish oil supplement are excellent sources.

Next up are diet changes:

  • Load Up on Cruciferous Vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and kale contain sulforaphanes that support healthy prostate function. Include these powerhouse vegetables in your meals several times per week.
  • Limit Inflammatory Foods: Eat fewer processed foods, limit added sugars, and avoid trans fats, as these foods promote inflammation and can negatively impact prostate health.
  • Stay Hydrated: With more frequent bathroom trips, you might be tempted to limit your liquids. Don’t—proper hydration is crucial for urinary and prostate health.

Finally, making a few lifestyle tweaks can help:

  • Regular Exercise: Studies show that men who exercise regularly have better prostate health. Even moderate activity like a daily brisk walk counts.
  • Maintain a Healthy Weight: Excess weight, particularly around the midsection, can harm prostate health. Focus on a balanced diet rich in whole foods and regular physical activity.

Remember, with natural approaches, consistency is key. These strategies work best when implemented as part of a long-term health plan rather than a quick fix.

When symptoms like frequent nighttime urination and a weak stream become bothersome, it’s always a good idea to consult a healthcare professional who can provide personalized guidance.
