Mailbag! How to EASE Carpal Tunnel Pain

I have carpal tunnel from being a painter for forty years. What would you suggest for treatment?

–Bill from Kissimmee, FL

Bill,

Years ago, I suffered from carpal tunnel when I worked for a medical information company and was using a mouse a lot. It got so bad I couldn’t hold on to a hammer while helping a neighbor build a fence.

The carpal tunnel is a small area in your wrist that swells from overuse and inflammation. That swelling squeezes on the nerves, causing the pain and lack of ability to use the hand.

It is certainly an aggravating condition, but there are many ways to alleviate it.

  • Use your other hand. It will take time, but eventually, it gets easier using your non-dominant hand.
  • While I haven’t seen braces work that well, some people swear by them. They work best when they transfer the load off of the normal muscles to other muscles.
  • Massage. Most people don’t know that most of the muscles that control the hand are actually between your elbow and your wrist. Place your palm up and work all those muscles. I like using a vibrating massager and pushing deep into those muscles. The pain will tell you where to work the most.
  • Ice. One of my kids, who is very athletic, says that ice is a “miracle cure.” And it is. If you struggle with pain, put your entire hand and lower arm in a bucket full of water and ice. Do this for 15 minutes, then let your arm warm up… and then do it again. Sitting and watching television is a great distraction while cooling your hand and arm.
  • Anti-inflammatories. There are many powerful and natural inflammation fighters that you should take all the time. These include fish oil, curcumin, Boswellia, and others.
