MAILBAG: Is the Flu Shot RIGHT for YOU?

Dear Living Well Daily Reader,

“Along with COVID, I’m worried about getting the flu this year. What do you recommend for avoiding the flu? The flu shot?”

– Mike from Park City, UT

Hi Mike,

I’ll be honest. The flu vaccine COULD have a better long-term track record.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), recent studies show the vaccine can reduce the risk of flu illness by between 40 and 60 percent depending on the strain and the year.

But the reality is there are some years when flu vaccine is only 14 percent effective.

Plus, it tends to be less effective in seniors than other folks.

But, like the COVID-19 vaccine, the flu vaccine also reduces the risk of severe infection that sends someone to the hospital (including those older adults). And that alone may be reason enough to get one.

So, here are some questions to help you decide.

  • Do you live in a crowded area, like a city?
  • How healthy are you?
  • Are you willing to wear a mask?

Here’s what I’ve told others who have similar questions…

If you live in a place where you’re constantly bumping into people, you SHOULD get the flu vaccine.

If you live in a rural location far from other folks, you’re willing to wear a mask when you go to the store or into town, no one around you is doing risky things, and you’re healthy, then maybe you can SKIP it.

And, finally, if you have any chronic condition: heart disease, diabetes, or cancer, you SHOULD get the flu shot.

But as with any health decision, these are only suggestions. Talk with your own doctor about what’s best for YOU.

You can also take this flu-fighting “immunity cocktail” when cases are surging in your area…

  • Vitamin D (3,000-5,000 IUs daily)
  • Berberine, Turmeric, and Olive Leaf
  • Probiotic/Polyphenols (I take my probiotic in a super-food blend)

This combo could provide extra protection when you need it most.

P.S. Regardless of whether you decide to get a flu shot or not, you can SAFEGUARD your health with these 7 delicious powerhouse foods that can BEEF UP your immune system.
